College Magazine Evaluation

Front Cover

I am analysing the front cover of my AS Media Studies College magazine. The denotations of my front cover is the masthead, the different tags, the main image (the mid-shot), the top line, the bottom bar and the sticker.

Within the articles I used swirly font and I did this because its almost like handwriting and school is where you learn to write. I did the articles in white so the stand out. I did the title and the bar in the colour green as it has connotations of our college Hyde Clarendon Sixth Form as the inside of our college is basically green. I sticker also has connotations of our college as it is yellow and our college logo is yellow. The main image (Matheus) has connotations of a happy college student as he is wearing the tag in which everyone at our college must where, he is smiling which represent Hyde Clarendon as a good and friendly college and he is in his own clothes with every student at our college does. The bottom bar, the masthead, the sticker and the top line all are in the same font which represents the professional side of the magazine but the articles are in a handwriting font which could represent the more free and creative side of the magazine. I named the magazine "Education" as this is what you are trying to get from college, Education is the main idea and the main topic in our college therefore I found it to be the perfect title for a college magazine.

What I like about my front cover is that I have used up the space, I have added a bar and a sticker which makes it look more professional and I also like the colour scheme. To improve it, I would choose different font for the articles, make the photo of Matt look more professional and I would make the articles stand out more.

Contents Page

I am also analysing the contents page of my AS Media Studies College magazine. The denotations of my contents page is the title, the articles and page numbers, and the main image.

I made the title "Contents" green to again show the connotations of our college. I added a professional picture from our college and all the students are happy, smiling and working hard which shows the connotations of our college being successful and a happy place to be. I also included the swirly writing to again show the handwriting font which has connotations of education as you learn to write at school. I made the font on the contents page the same as the front cover to link back the font. I also made the background white so everything stands out.

What I like about my contents page is how it stands out and how I have linked it back to the front cover. To improve it I would take my own photographs and I would add a background to make it look more professional.

Contents Page

The Process of making my Contents Page

My contents page was a quick and simple process. I started off with a blank A4 page and then I added the title "Contents" using the same font as the title off the front cover and I again used green as green is the main colour shown in our college.

The next thing I did was type "Hyde Clarendon Sixth Form College" into google and this image came up. I saved the image and added it to photoshop. Then with photoshop I used the magic tool to remove the background out of this image. I then added it to the side of my Contents Page.

This is now the end result of my contents page. I added the font using the same font I did for the articles on the front cover. I did the font in black to make it stand out. I did the numbers larger to make them stand out more and I also used bigger numbers to make the magazine seem more professional.  I am not impressed by the end Conclusion of my Contents page but as this is just a practice, I am sure my skills will progress throughout the project.

College Magazine

The Process of Making my college magazine

Next I added the masthead of the magazine "Education"and I added the positioning statement "Hyde Clarendon Sixth Form Exclusive". I choose to do the title green as the main colour in our building is green. I did the positioning statement black so it stands out. I also choose to do them in the same font as I don't want to add too many different fonts into my magazine.
The first thing I did was I went on Google and added a photo to photoshop of our building Hyde Clarendon Sixth Form. I then began to adjust the brightness and contrast so when I placed my font on the cover it would stand out.

I then added the picture I took of Matt and I opened it up on photoshop. I used the magic tool to cut out the background on the picture and I then added it to the building.

I then added a yellow sticker to my magazine which says "Exclusive pictures to Media students London Trip". I made the sticker yellow because our college logo is yellow.

The next thing I did was add the articles to the magazine. I did it the font in white because it stand out against the background.

Finally, I added the green bar at the bottom with the USP. This makes the magazine look more professional and it makes the reader more interested in buying it.

I am quite pleased with the outcome of my magazine as it looks quite professional and it stands out. Although my magazine isn't up to high standards, I'm sure it will be at the end of the project. To improve it I would make it look more professional and I would make it look more like a magazine.

'Why Magazine'

Step By Step

First of all, I opened this document on Indesign and made the background purple by drawing a box over the page.

I then added the title 'Why Magazine' by inserting a textbox, I then picked my own font for the masthead.

Next I added a picture of Robert Pattinson by dragging it into the document from Google.

I then drew another textbox for the font and copied the text from word where it was provided for us.

I made the picture inline with the text and then added the picture of Wiz Khalifa.

Outcome

We did the process so we could decide whether we wanted to use this process or photoshop when making our magazine. I found this method very difficult and I wasn't really happy with the outcome. I may experiment with this method again but I find photoshop to be much easier and simple.

Skin Photoshop.

Step By Step

The first thing I did was open this image up on Photoshop.
I then removed her spots and covered the shiny parts on her face using a 'Spot Brush'.
Next I made the image slightly blurred using 'Smart Blur'.
Then I removed the 'Smart Blur' from her hair to give her hair a bit more definition.
Then I drew her eyebrows, eyeshadow and eyeliner on using the Brush tool.

Outcome

I found my outcome to not be as good as it probably could of been as she looks quite fake and using Photoshop I could of made her look more natural. I found this task quite difficult but as we are just practicing to use Photoshop, I'm sure it will get easier as we use it more.

Photoshop Challenge.

Step By Step

First, I opened up photoshop and opened up an A4 new page on photoshop.
Next, I wrote 'AS Media Studies' in Red Century Gothic writing, size 24 and added a shadow using 'drop shadow'.
Then I made the background blue by double clicking on 'layer 1'.
I placed the writing in the middle of the page and saved a picture of Michael Jackson and opened it up on photoshop.
I then used the magical tool to edit the background of Michael Jackson.
I also used the magic tool to highlight his hair and I opened up Images > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation. With this I changed the colour of his hair.
Changing the colour of his hair wasn't very successful for me as his hair was difficult to highlight.

Outcome

With the task we was given, it cam out quite successful minus the hair in my opinion. However, I personally don't like the look of this image as it is quite bright and plain but I was successful in completing the task.

CD Cover.

Step by Step

First I added the three images to photoshop; the Notes, the CD and the Trumpet.
Next I used the magic tool to cut out the backgrounds on the CD and Trumpet. I also used it for cutting out the white parts on the Trumpet.
I then changed the sizes of the images and I placed them in the positions that I wanted them to be in on the CD cover.
Next I had a play around with the colours of the images. I changed the Gradient, Vibrance and Exposure and that prevented the CD cover to be black and white.
I then added text. I called it 'Classique' which means classical in french as I felt the CD cover had a classical music vibe and I added my name; 'Paige Artus'.
I then changed the font of the text and i changed it to a rich gold colour.
Finally, I saved it as a JPEG.

Outcome

I am very pleased with the outcome as I think it looks quite smart and professional. I could improve it by making the font stand out more but I am happy with it as this is the outcome of me 'playing around' on Photoshop.
